Does this unit need leak checks, and how often?

Choose the refrigerant, enter the charge from the rating plate and you see straight away whether a leak check is required, how often, and whether records go with it. The tool calculates with Article 5 of Regulation (EU) 2024/573, the EU F-gas Regulation, for stationary air conditioners, heat pumps and refrigeration installations.

This is an explanation, not legal advice. What applies to your installation is in the regulation itself.

GWP from Annex I of the regulation.

It is on the rating plate. A decimal point or a decimal comma both work, such as 2.4.

Hermetically sealed according to the label?

A split system connected on site is never hermetically sealed.

Fixed leak detection system in place?

  • 8 kg R32 × GWP 675 ÷ 1000 = 5.4 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
  • With 5.4 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, the unit must be checked for leaks every 12 months.
  • Records are mandatory. The operator keeps them: whoever actually controls how the unit works, usually the owner or the user. The check is done by a certified technician.

checklist/

What belongs in the records.

If a unit has a leak check obligation, the operator keeps records of it (Article 7). The operator is whoever actually controls how the unit works. That is usually your customer, and you supply the data.

  1. How much and which refrigerant is in it, and what was added at installation.
  2. What was added during maintenance or after a leak, with the date.
  3. How much was recovered.
  4. When refilling: whether it was recycled or reclaimed gas, and from which company.
  5. Which company did the work, who carried it out and the certificate number.
  6. When the unit was checked for leaks and with what result, and when a leak was repaired.
  7. When taken out of service: how the gas was recovered and disposed of.

Article 7(1), points (a) to (g) of Regulation (EU) 2024/573, in plain words.

Send me the outcome and the checklist.

You do not need this to see the outcome; it is already shown above. Would you like it in your email with the checklist, for your customer or your own records? Then the maker of Fikst sends it to you within one working day.

We only use your details to send you this email. See the privacy statement.

and Fikst/

This calculation is in Fikst too.

Fikst is software for air conditioning, heat pump and installation companies. The F-gas records are built in, next to your technician's work order, and calculate exactly like this tool. But then for every installation in your register at once.

  • The register

Every installation with refrigerant, charge and CO2 equivalent. The interval follows from that, on both scales, including for a blend.

  • The check schedule

Leak checks, follow-up checks after a repair and leak repairs in one list, with what is coming up and what is overdue. With the Create work order button you put the check on a work order.

  • The label

Per installation you create a label with the data from the register. If the charge changes, you see that a new one is needed.

Consulted on 12 October 2026, in the Dutch text of the regulation; the link below goes to the English text of the same regulation. The tool calculates with Articles 3, 5, 6 and 7 and Annexes I, II and VI of Regulation (EU) 2024/573. The composition of blends such as R410A and R454B is not in the regulation; it comes from ASHRAE 34. For hermetically sealed equipment the tool takes the strictest reading: the unit must stay below every limit that applies to its gas.
